Home ground.

Hertfordshire is where I am based and where most of my work is. It is a county of market towns, old villages and a lot of in-between: gardens that back onto farmland on one side and a housing estate on the other.

The ground you’re working with

Growing conditions here change from one village to the next, and sometimes from one end of a garden to the other. That is no bad thing. Once you know what your patch offers, there is a whole palette of planting that will love it, and choosing plants to suit the spot is where every good garden starts.

The work

Typical work here runs from a full garden design for a village house to reworking the planting on a plot that has been left to its own devices for a decade.

Nature doesn’t need to be added to a garden. It’s already there.
